How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, Audi tt key case UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an excellent choice.

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi car key cover, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning.
